Dye

The desire to decorate clothes, everyday objects and dwellings with bright colors is almost as old as mankind itself.

The Celts had plants, fungi, lichens and animal materials at their disposal to dye fabrics. For yellow shades there were, for example, dyer's dew and dyer's broom, for red the roots of the madder plant and the Kermes louse, for blue woad. Countless other shades can be created by overdyeing.
